This is also consistent with past MFC experiences that acetate and propionate are well suited as carbon sources for power generation [30,31]. On the other hand, the voltage was decreased when
butyrate degradation occurred, which made a minor contribution to electricity production. The degradation of acetate and propionate appears to be influenced significantly by a thermodynamically favorable reaction. Non-VFAs were also degraded and contributed to the bioelectrochemical reaction. This suggests thatMFCs are able to help sludge reduction by degradation of organicmatterswhen the feed contains high solids contents.
