Renting can create social problems but can also bring benefits. Housing tenants increase population densities, reducing urban sprawl and cutting some of the demand for expensive infrastructure in peri-urban
areas. An adequate supply of reasonably priced rental accommodation is also likely to reduce the temptation for poor families to mount land invasions or to buy plots in illegal subdivisions. A higher incidence of
renting is also likely to ease the organization of public transport given that more people are concentrated into a small area and most tenants choose to live near to bus or train routes.
