Professional dominated phase. This phase is characterized by a highly
trusting dependence on health professionals to direct health care for
the child while the family adjusts to the health care situation. Typically,
this phase is expected during the initial diagnosis of the chronic
health condition or during a life-threatening circumstance or relapse.
Participatory phase. This phase occurs in response to the continuing
chronic condition of the child and its disrupting effect on family life.
In this phase, critical consciousness and action become evident.
Family members begin to see themselves as important participants in
health care decision making regarding their child. They learn as much
as they can about the child’s care and the rules of the health care system.
In addition, family members begin to seek out peer support and experiment
with changing roles and responsibilities to improve their family
life.
