The psychological contract is broken for two primary reasons: (1) We fail to make explicit our own expectations and fail to inquire into the expectations of the other parties; and/or (2) we further assume that the other party has the same expectations that we hold. So as long as people meet our expectations everything is fine; when they don't meet our expectations, we are in conflict. Thus, it is important to share information and negotiate expectations assertively. After all, how can you expect others to meet your expectations when they don't know what they are?
