- Monday 18 July 2016

BANGKOK, 7 October 2015 (NNT) – The cabinet has decided to extend public holidays in 2016 to boost public spending.
According to the Tourism and Sports Minister, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, Friday, May 6, 2016 will be included in the Coronation Day holidays, which will fall on Thursday, May,8 2016 so that the public can enjoy a four-day vacation. The cabinet has also added Monday 18 July, 2016 to the 16-20 July Asalahabucha Day and Buddhist Lent festival, bringing the number of feast days to five.
Mrs. Kobkarn said the added holidays were meant to enable the public to engage in recreational activities and to take a trip to domestic attractions in order to boost spending in the low season. According to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, domestic tourism generates around 700 billion baht in revenue yearly. As much as 70 percent of Thai vacationers use private vehicles as the main mode of transport.
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has also been working with major gas stations and rest areas across the country to develop local product outlets to attract Thai and foreign shoppers. The plan is expected to be completed within three months.
