(5) Quality can have a cost factor. Full emphasis must be given to the three basic "costs" of quality:
• achieving prevention to allow "right first time";
• the audit process to ensure it will be right;
• failure equals the cost of allowing errors to occur.
Failure costs occur in every organization and can become the "acceptable norm", if the true cost factors are unrecognized. Consider some of these important areas of potential cost to a health care unit: patient complaints; loss of confidence and reputation; lack of support from GPs; potential litigation; wastage of materials; and unco - ordinated daily activities.
