Biochemical parameters evaluating oxidative stress and antioxidant
in normal healthy subjects and β-thalassemia/Hb E patients
receiving curcuminoids were shown in Table 3. All parameters
analyzed in normal subjects were significantly different from patients
(pb0.001). The percentage of MHb was significantly decreased
(pb0.05) after administration of curcuminoids for 12 months, while
there were no changes in Hb levels. The levels of H2O2-induced RBC
MDA were significantly higher in the patients than in normal subjects
(pb0.001) and reduced significantly following treatment up to 6
months and remained the same for the rest of the year. After
withdrawal for 3 months, MDA levels in RBC increased but were still
below the level detected before treatment (Fig. 1A).
