Certificate Program
The SACCP in the Department of Addictions and
Rehabilitation Studies at East Carolina University
(ECU) is distinct in that it’s the only substance abuse
counseling graduate certificate in North Carolina delivered
completely online. The SACCP is designed to retool
the skills of rehabilitation counselors, expand the
skill set of other helping professionals such as juvenile
justice and school counselors, and update substance
abuse counselors’ knowledge to serve clients better.
The certificate program was launchedwhen Chapin and
Goodwin (2006), in their research on students in the rehabilitation
program, found that the fourth ranked reason
students gave for applying to the program at ECU
was the pursuit of a state license or certificate. Their
conclusion was that students and professionals who already
hold a degree might also need a certificate program
to increase their academic substance-specific
hours in order tomeet state licensure or certification requirements.
East Carolina University has offered the post-bachelor’s
SACCP since 2005. It is embedded in the Substance
Abuse and Clinical Counseling graduate program,
which has a total of four full-time faculty, who
have terminal degrees and 120 cumulative years in the
field of substance abuse. In addition, two adjunct faculty
teach in the program; one is a Professor Emeritus
and a founding member of the department, and the
other also has a terminal degree
