As the early years of the new millennium unfold, there is general agreement that information literacy is important, but a lack of consensus exists about which literacies are absolutely essential, how they best can be learned, and how they best can be assessed. Important guidelines currently under review include visual literacy (for mediating a visual culture), media literacy (to cope with the variety of information formats), multiple literacies (a meta-perspective), technological competence or fitness, and workplace competence.
