In some commercial and military activities radioactive
wastes are mixed with hazardous waste, creating a complex
environmental problem. Mixed waste is dually regulated
by the EPA and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory
Commission, and waste handlers must comply with
both the Atomic Energy Act and Resource, Conservation
and Recovery Act statutes and regulations once a waste is
deemed a mixed waste. Military sources are regulated by
the Department of Energy and comply with the Atomic
Energy Act, in regard to radiation safety.
