Africa leads the world with respect to both HIV prevalence and total number of cases, with more than 24.5 million cases comprising more than 60% of the world's HIV-positive people. The 19 countries worldwide with the highest prevalence of reported infections are all in Africa. South Africa is reported to have the largest population living with the disease, at well over 5 million people infected, followed by Nigeria in second place. India comes in third, with more than 2 million cases. This, however, is not due to a high prevalence rate, but to India's large overall population. The prevalence rate of HIV in India is 0.3%, which is much lower than that of countries such as the United States (0.6%) and South Africa (18.10%).
