Use the least amount of suction pressure that will achieve successful drainage. Check the suction gauges every 2 to 4 hours to make sure that gastrointestinal contents are flowing in the direction of the collection container. To test suction, temporarily disconnect the tubing at the junction between the nasogastric and the draining tubing to hear the sound of the suction. Also make sure that the container is replaced before it becomes full so that suction is maintained.
