A valid or satisfactory solution is simply one that is feasible (or close enough to be easily fixed). The quality of the solution is measured by calculating the total weight of the structure, i.e., the cross sectional area of each member multiplied by its length, multiplied by the density of the material. Subject to the requirement that the structure be valid, or at least satisfactory, the lowest possible weight is desired.
