Rebalancing. With the setting of export-oriented economies in the Asia–Pacific,
global trade flows, notably with North America, have become significantly
balanced (see Fig. 10.8). Since economic history underlines that imbalances are
eventually rectified, the rebalancing (which could involve a drop in imports and
a growth in exports) will have important consequences for global logistics. It has
been shown in this chapter that complex regional freight distribution structures
have been developed to accommodate this pattern. The recessionary period that
began in 2008 may be the beginning of a phase of readjustment, with complex
and unforeseen changes in logistics.
