Figure 10 shows a chain that is used in basins of waste
water treatment plants. It had carbon steel links and
stainless steel pins and bushings (9).The design results in
numerous crevices: at the rivet head and where the
bushing is pressed into the links. In addition, because
the chains work in a highly conductive environment,
there was galvanic corrosion between the carbon steel
links and the stainless steel parts. The corrosion loosed
the pin seats and the pressed in bushings resulting
eventually in failure of the links. A better design would
have been to construct the entire chain with stainless
steel which would have eliminated galvanic corrosion.
