Intrinsic cognitive load relates to the difficulty of the subject matter (Cooper 1998; Sweller and Chandler 1994). More specifically, material that contains a large number of interactive elements is regarded as more difficult than material with a smaller number of elements and/or with a low interactivity. Low interactivity material consists of single, simple, elements that can be learned in isolation, whereas in high interactivity material individual elements can only be well understood in relation to other elements.
