Low-scoring games.
But to be more precise, it's not just about low-scoring games -- it's about the lack of a sense of progress in the game. American spectators are used to seeing a change in the state of the game that is permanent, or at least very hard to reverse (other than the time on the clock). Of course, a change in the score counts as permanent progress, but that's pretty much it and doesn't happen often. Other American sports have more things that can be counted as progress.
