This is the type of package of components that is offered by Windows or the Macintosh. Of the many desktops available for Linux, two are of major importance. They are the Gnome and KDE projects, which both started around 1997, with the goal of introducing a richly featured desktop, and have released new versions regularly since. These systems now compete with Windows for consistency and ease of use and learning, but they are perhaps not so close to OS X yet.
