i went to a boarding school, so i spent long periods away from my family, which i regret at the time, although i suppose it didn't do me any harm. the school was very strong on the duty you owe to society and to your family, although as a nine year old, since i was not allowed out of the school grounds very often and, er, i didn't see my family, i did not understand the meaning of the word. it seems a world which was full of rules. it was quite a religious place as well, there were lots of priests looking after us, and we were meant to respect them, but we didn't. the other important concept was that of the homeland: england, not even britain. patriotism was fundamental value -the love of being english
