Due to unreasonable water utilization and exploration, surface water has been gradually drying and groundwater becomes the major source. Near the city of Urumqi, most of water resources
derived from the groundwater reservoir in Wulabo lowland.
The estimated annual groundwater storage of the depression reaches
, and the groundwater depth is about 7–10 m.
The main crops in this area are incorporating corns, cotton, bean, wheat, grain and some tropical fruits (e.g. grape, melon). In each
zone,
three wells are set up for agricultural irrigation.
The planning horizon is 15 years, which is further divided to three equal periods,i.e.
5 years for each.
