Reading Steps:
Pre-reading:
There are two texts in this task. Before reading the texts, it would be best for you to read the questions first so that you can decide which reading strategy or technique to use to complete this task. When you want to find specific information or answers to specific questions, “scanning” is the best strategy to use to come up with the answers as quickly as possible without having to go through every detail in the text. What you need to do is to look for the key word, like a number, a proper name or a capitalized word; for example, for questions 1 and 2 of Text 1, you should scan for capitalized words alongside the word “Pyramid” and the number/year with the word “UNESCO” close by. On the other hand, if you want to grasp the key essence of the text or to understand the main idea, “skimming” is your best choice; for example, in order to answer questions 3-5, you may need to use both skimming and scanning. Go to Resources for more detail on reading strategies. Prepare to time your reading to find out if you spend too much time on the task.
While-reading:
In order to answer the questions in this task, you do not need to understand the meaning of every word and reading in detail is not necessary. For this reason, you are not supposed to spend too much time reading the texts. Don’t forget that you are timing to see how long the task takes.
Post-reading:
Answer all the questions. You do not have to answer in full sentences; short answers are enough.
