This seems to be in stark contrast to the fact that many aspects of the topic radiation are well suited for implementing science, technology and society (STS) in science classes (for more on STS cf. Bybee 1987; DeBoer 2000). Discussions of nuclear issues, mobile phone radiation, research on infrared scanners, different sources of UV and various uses of radiation in medicine are all possible examples of topics to explore. The benefit of topics like these is that a good foundation in basic physics is necessary in order to understand how these devices work and in order to be able to give reasons why radiation, in these contexts, is harmful or harmless to the human body.
