I want to explain what I mean by this with reference to a poem, and I apologies for sticking with English for a moment or two more. In English, as in other subjects, we are often confronted with the stupid syndrome. It’s what happens when pupils are faced with a difficulty and it has three variations. They don’t understand the poem, so either it’s stupid (It’s a stupid poem; why doesn’t he just say what he means?) or I’m stupid (I’ll never understand it) or the teacher’s stupid (Why do we have to read this stuff?). This is an understandable reaction to difficulty.
