Transience is not the only barrier homeless youth face in building supportive relationships. Among housed youth, seeking out close relations with peers is considered adaptive found that when in socially hostile environments, youth tend to develop avoidant attachment styles. This is in line with narratives from homeless youth which emphasize the importance of street smarts and being careful about whom one trusts. As such, an avoidance approach to relationships that promotes loneliness may actually be adaptive in street contexts.
