Body Mass Index (BMI) and weight category. The height and
weight(using a weight scale) was measured before the interview to
compute the BMI. We used the BMI to obtain the child’s weight category
(under, over, or normal weight) using North American growth
charts (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2000). According
to the growth charts, 73% (n = 105) of the children in our sample
were normal weight, and 27% (n = 39) were overweight. In the normal
weight group, means (with standard deviations in parentheses)
of weight,height, andBMI were 17.5 kg (2.5), 1.04 m(0.07), and 15.8
(0.86) respectively. In the overweight group, means and standard
deviations of weight, height, and BMI were 21.8 kg (5.8), 1.06 m
(0.08), and 19.3 (2.7) respectively. In girls, 71% (n = 48) were normal
weight while 29% (n = 20) were overweight. These proportions
were the same in boys, with 72% (n = 55) who were normal weight
and 28% (n = 21) who were overweight.
