A 69-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital with a
fracture of the left femoral diaphysis. She reported prodromal
hip pain for 7 days prior to admission. Radiographs taken on
admission demonstrated a transverse fracture line on the
lateral cortex that became oblique on the medial cortex
(Fig. 1). There was focal thickening of the lateral cortex at
the level of the fracture as well as at other points in the
diaphysis
