moment for harvesting sweet sorghum is immediately after
flowering. In fact, both in terms of fermentable sugars and
biomass accumulation, flowering represents the stage at
which the accumulation is maximum. After that date, in fact,
sugars are translocated towards the grain and physiological
activity is focused on grain filling, causing a decrease in sugars
accumulated into stalk and a stop in the biomass weight increase.
Moreover, this consideration is also supported by a
general worsening of water use efficiency between the two
harvest dates, showing that a lengthening of the cultivation
period is not justified from the point of view of a sustainable
management of water resource
