The purpose of tack welding is to hold pieces in place prior to welding. Tack welds have negligible tensile
strength. They are simply a superficial fusion of the pieces and cannot be compared with the tensile
strength achieved by welding with a rod or a flat strip.
Tack welds help to eliminate the use of clamps, jigs, or additional man power, commonly needed to hold
the pieces close together.
