There are some useful insights to be drawn from the transport literature. Several writers
have rejected the conventional wisdom of determining future trends in terms of what has
gone before. They have drawn scenarios of alternative transport systems which are less
impacting on the environment yet still meet the needs of social networking and more
modest mobility requirements (Ausubul and Marchetti, 2001). Moriarty and Honnery
(2008) argue that it is unlikely that we will continue to invest in measures to increase
mobility; this is not the way forward. They have drafted a low mobility scenario in relation
to the city of Melbourne in Australia which takes into account the full human and environ-
mental consequences of the current ascendancy of air and car travel. It provides a challen-
ging overview.
