Here are five things Guardiola may need to improve if the former Barca and Bayern Munich manager is to keep up his record of never failing to reach the semifinals of the Champions League.
1. Improve City's home record
Until the blip of last season when City lost five games at home, the Etihad has been a relative fortress in the Premier League with just seven defeats there in the previous five seasons. The same cannot be said in the Champions League where they have struggled to break teams down with a draw having much more currency in the group stage or a two-legged tie.
Even on last season's run to the last four, City won only half of their home games and they weren't convincing wins either. They trailed Tuesday's opponents Monchengladbach 2-1 with 11 minutes to go until two late strikes from Raheem Sterling and another from Wilfried Bony made it a comfortable scoreline, while the 2-1 win against Sevilla came via an injury-time winner from Kevin De Bruyne.
Home records in previous Champions League campaigns are worse. In 2014-15, they won only one of four games at home and lost to CSKA Moscow and Barcelona. The season before City lost two and won two and in 2012-13 they failed to win any of their three group games at home. It's a record that Guardiola must improve.
