Smoking cessation: determination of whether the young
woman, her partner or family members smoke is an essential
part of the first contact. Smoking amongst teenagers in on the
decline in the UK, although 10% of 15 year olds smoked regularly
in 2012. Whilst most young people will be receptive to the
idea that stopping smoking and making their home smoke free
will be beneficial for them and their baby, teenage mothers are
three times more likely to smoke throughout pregnancy than
older mothers. Pregnant teenagers should be referred to specialist
maternity smoking cessation services and advised about the
Smokefree website at www.smokefree.nhs.uk. Attempts should
be made to engage the entire family in smoking cessation in
order to maximize the chances of the pregnant teenager successfully
stopping smoking.
