Seasonal breeding is a common reproductive strategy among
elasmobranchs, and has developed among individuals to help ensure
that young are born when environmental conditions are the most
conducive to survival (Wourms and Demski, 1993). In addition to
reducing juvenile mortality, reproducing seasonally also synchronizes
populations, making reproduction more efficient. This strategy is
especially prevalent among individuals in elasmobranch species that
inhabit temperate regions where environmental conditions can vary
widely with season (Wourms and Demski, 1993)
