Here is an example of probing in action:
Interviewer: “What do you like most about the Maple Hill After School Arts Program?”
Respondent: “It’s good.”
Interviewer: “What makes it good?”
Respondent: “The staff is nice.”
Interviewer: “What’s nice about them?”
Respondent: “They really seem to care about my son, and they’re always friendly to me when
I pick him up.”
Interviewer: “What else do you like most about the program?”
Respondent: “Well, it’s close.”
Interviewer: “Close to what?”
Respondent: “Close to my house—it’s right around the corner.”
Interviewer: “What else?”
Respondent: “Its reputation.”
Interviewer: “What about its reputation?”
Respondent: “I’ve heard a lot of really good things about the program from other moms.
Everyone says you can trust them and that kids have a good time there.”
