The Romans conquered the Paris basin in 52 BC,[29] building a new town on the left bank around the present site of the Pantheon, and on the Île de la Cité. The Gallo-Roman town was originally called Lutetia, or Lutetia Parisorum but later Gallicised to Lutèce.[30] It became a prosperous city with a forum, baths, temples, theatres, and an amphitheatre.[31]
