Damnit, I thought. This would be a hell of a lot easier if I could teach any of my pokemon to use flash. The cave I was currently stumbling through was pitch black, but I was told to deliver a letter to some guy called Steven. And I always get my job done. So I trudged on through the darkness. It must have been over an hour since I’d entered the place. Maybe Steven had already left. How would I even know if I found him? I sighed aloud.
“Hello? Is anyone there?” I heard a voice call. Suddenly, the cavern was filled with a harsh, blinding light. I started and fell on my butt.
Shielding my eyes with my hand, I replied “Just a lost trainer trying to deliver a letter. Could you please stop blinding me?”
“Oh, I’m so sorry! Metagross, could you please tone down the light?” There was a steely cry and the light faded to a dull glow. As the spots began to clear from my vision, I could see the silhouette of a young man standing by the source of the illumination, which I guessed was a pokemon called Metagross. He strode over to me and offered his hand to pull me up, which I gratefully took.
“Thanks,” I said, brushing dirt off my jeans.
“Have you been wandering in the dark?”
“Yeah, I don’t have a pokemon that can learn flash, unfortunately. Just me, Mudkip, Dustox, and Poochyena!”
“And yet you willingly entered this dark cave, to deliver a letter? I must admit, that’s quite brave and headstrong of you!”
I laughed. “Headstrong, yeah, that sounds about right. By the way, you haven’t seen a guy named Steven around here anywhere, have you? That’s who the letter’s for.”
“Oh!” He said, “that would be me!”
“Ah, nice to meet you then, Steven. I’m ____. And this letter belongs to you!” I handed him the envelope, which was a bit dirty, but not ripped or anything. He accepted the letter, and called to his Metagross to brighten the room enough to read it.
As the light intensified, I could see Steven’s face for the first time. His hair and eyes were a steely gray, despite the fact that he was probably only a little bit older than me. The lines of his face were hard, as if he were carved from stone (which ironically, according to the address on the letter, was his last name). Boy, am I a sucker for a nice jawline. He was tall and lean, and even though he was deep in a cave, he wore a nice suit. It didn’t even look like a speck of dirt had touched him. The dirt probably didn’t feel worthy enough to touch him. All in all, he looked like a gorgeous gentleman.
Steven finished reading the letter and looked up at me. “It seems I must return to Rustboro for the time being. Would you like for me to show you out?”
I mentally chided myself for being so distracted by his looks. “That’d be great, actually!” There was no way I'd stumble through the darkness for another hour, tripping over Aron and Geodude.
He smiled kindly. “Follow me, Miss ____.”
We fell into step as his Metagross lit the cavernous walls and showed the path.
“So, ____, you said that you’re a trainer?”
“Yep! I was sent by professor Elm to collect data for his pokedex. And it’s always been my dream to challenge the gyms.”
“And have you?” He asked, and I could hear genuine curiosity in his voice.
I nodded enthusiastically. “Two down, Six to go!” I beamed at him, holding one side of my vest open to reveal the badges that I had sewn in.
His eyes glinted. “Impressive. What will you do once you’ve collected them all?”
“Well, I’ll go to Ever Grande City to challenge the elite four and the champion, and I’ll keep at it until I win!”
He laughed. “Well I have no doubt that you’ll get there! But make no mistake, the elite four are incredibly skilled. Do not underestimate them.”
“I won’t! But I still have a lot more training to do in the meantime.”
I hadn’t noticed, but we were at the mouth of the cave already.
“I’m afraid this is where we must part ways, ____. But I enjoyed meeting you. And I’m sure our paths will cross again!” He chuckled to himself and called out some sort of steel-flying pokemon.
“Nice to meet you too, Steven!” I wasn’t sure why he seemed so sure we’d meet again, but I really hoped he was right.
He hopped on his pokemon, and waved to me as it took off toward Rustboro in the north. That was one speedy flier, it was gone in a few seconds! I stood there for a moment, thinking about the gorgeous man and his steely pokemon, then shook my head, smiled, and headed back into Dewford Town.
If Steven said we’d meet again, then I was pretty sure that we would indeed.
