Managers today are facing difficult decisions about whether to adopt RFID or wait
until the technology matures further. Uncertainties around future RFID developments
can span strategy, technology, system implementation, data security, investment
payback horizon, and human acceptance (Lee and Ozer, 2007). Ferguson (2006) suggests
that “the business case spending on RFID is a raw guess,” making ROI difficult to
evaluate (Hozak and Collier, 2008). Few reliable ROI analyses of RFID applications are
available (Lee and Ozer, 2007). Faced with uncertainty regarding whether RFID is ready
to support their needs, managers may put off adoption, hindering broad adoption and
scale economies that decrease costs (Heim et al., 2009).
