2.4. Green manure application
Ex situ generation of Gliricidia green manure was practiced, as many farms hold a separate wood lots and fences with this species for provision of fuel-wood, support for crops and green manure. Gliricidia trees were lopped at the onset of both seasons (September and late April for the major and minor seasons respectively) and the green leaf was applied to fields after harvesting of wood on two occasions in the major and one occasion in the minor season. Gliricidia was applied at a rate of 3 tonnes ha−1 (dry weight basis, 80% moisture subtracted) in two applications providing approximately 24 kg N, 3 kg P, 18 kg K per hectare, in the minor and major seasons, respectively.
