The imagemosaicshowsa2.25-mtail-sectionofasmall
cetacean (Fig. 2a). Thesectionobservedappearstoberoughly
one thirdofthewholecarcass,andfromthisweestimatethe
entire animaltomeasure5–8 minlength.Thecarcasswasinthe
earlystagesofdecompositionandinthe ‘mobile-scavenger’
successional stage.Theskinwasmissingfromtheentiresection,
clearlyexposingtheblubberandsofttissue,exceptattheveryend
of the fluke (Figs. 2a andd).The flesh remainedalmostintactwith
the exceptionofthe fluke, andtherightsideofthetail-section
where thetissueappearstohavebeentornintostrips(Fig. 2a).
Small piecesof flesh alsoappearedtobescatteredonthesediment
surrounding thecarcass.
