Uric acid concentrations were significantly higher (P < 0.01)among the men than among the women (baseline: 342.0 ± 16.7 compared with 216.1 ± 16.9 mol/L; Table 3). In general, uric acid concentrations were lower when the vitamin C concentration was higher, and an inverse association was observed between uric acid concentrations and plasma vitamin C concentrations across time in both men and women (r = –0.19, P = 0.05).
