A high proportion of the participants (66.7%) of the participants felt that Question 3, one which involved multi-step solution on combination, is a routine problem; 8 participants (29.6%) felt that Question 3 is non-routine while only one participant (3.7%) felt that this question is completely out of syllabus. An additional interesting observation of their answer script is that practically all solutions to this problem were obtained by combination approach. There were three solutions in which the participants missed out the case for the empty set; interestingly, none of the participants applied the multiplication principle to obtain164434241404=++++CCCCC04C162222=×××. This second approach uses multiplication principle and requires some paraphrasing of the problem.
