6 Korean National Costume, Hanbok
Korean National Costume, HanbokKorea's traditional clothing is called hanbok. Hanbok consists of a top and bottom. Men wear a jacket and pants. The jacket is called jeogori and the pants are called baji. The women wear a jacket and a skirt. The skirt is called chima. The chima is a full wrap-around skirt that is very comfortable. It comes up as high as the armpits. Both men and women wear an overcoat called durumagi when they go out. The jacket, chima and baji do not have buttons. Instead, the hanbok uses ties that are made into knots. The hanbok is easy to put on and take off.
The beauty of the traditional Korean costume lies in the soft curves, natural colors and simple design. The women's skirt, in particular, is elegantly long and billowing in a shape that reminds one of a full bodied and elegantly simple pottery jar, while the jacket is relatively short and tight to the upper body.
Today, there are two types of hanbok: One is traditional hanbok worn on special occasions such as traditional holidays or weddings, and the other is modernized hanbok tailored to suit contemporary lifestyle and living environments.
