data were also divided into two categories: plant e which includes
seedlings and trees, and tree e which includes only trees. Seedlings
were not included in their own category because of their ability to
establish in many areas, but not necessarily persist. As a result their
presence is not a particularly useful indicator. Forest cover was
estimated for each site by running a transect perpendicular to the
coastline and measuring the proportion of the transect that was
covered by trees.
