The flow pattern which characterizes bolus flow is in contrast to that in Poiseuille flow , inasmuch as there are radial components of velocity associated with bolus flow. The radial velocity components which exist at the terminal surfacr of the bolus will increase the rate of transfer of a material (e.g. oxygen) from the periphery of the bolus into the interior . The effectiveness of the radial velocity components in facilitating transport is the show in the next section . Since the dye completes its circuit in the bolus in about the time required for the bolus to travel twice its own length , the circuit of the plasma trapped between two red cells would be completed at least 10 times in the average length of a capillary .
