Pitfall trapping has a bias toward larger, active invertebrates such as spiders, ants
and ground beetles (New 1998), and catch is influenced by a variety of factors
including vegetation structure around the trap, trap layout, number and design oftraps, and preservative (Adis 1979). Most of these factors were standardised and
there was no evidence that vegetation had an influence on total catch in this case
(Hill 2001).
