The Association of South East Asian Nations, or ASEAN, was established on 8 August 1967 through the Bangkok Declaration. The original member states of ASEAN consist of five countries: Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. The founders of ASEAN - Adam Malik from Indonesia, Narciso R. Ramos from the Philippines, Tun Abdul Razak from Malaysia, S. Rajaratnam from Singapore and Thanat Khoman from Thailand - also represent the five member states.
