Severe hypomagnesaemia impairs PTH secretion and is a recognized
cause of hypocalcaemia.
A variety of hypomagnesaemic conditions
can present this way; including rare genetic syndromes in neonates and acquired disorders presenting later in life. Amongst the latter are malabsorption and short gut syndromes.
recently described two patients with symptomatic hypocalcaemia and hypomagnesaemia apparently related to the use of proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) drugs. We describe two additional cases, and data supporting the view that PPIs can induce a selective failure of intestinal magnesium absorption.
