The alpine meadows are the preferred habitat of the endemic
Himalayan wild herbivores: Pseudois nayaur Hodgson, Capricornis
thar Hodgson, Moschus chrysogaster Hodgson, etc. and the carnivores
such as the Uncia uncia Schreber. The Rumex nepalensis Spreng. has increasingly invaded the meadows in the recent years,
the nucleus being the halting places of the cattle during summer
(Parmananda, 1998). The immediate elimination of this weed is
required to save the alpine meadows. Appropriate action to check
the soil erosion need to be initiated in order to improve theflowand
water quality in the river Tons. Banning of the lopping, reduction
in the grazing pressure by stall-feeding and extensive plantation
of suitable native species, besides installing vegetative and engineering
soil conservation structures is suggested to overcome the
problem.
