Transportation departments throughout the country have traditionally gathered remotely sensed imagery and
associated by-products such as orthophotographics, digital mosaics, and orthographic contours to accomplish
specific tasks related to various analyses for a given transportation corridor. Typically, these products are collected
for a single purpose by different transportation entities such as Maintenance, Planning, Project Development, Rightof-Way
or Design. Each data collection event is costly and demands significant financial resources to generate a
given transportation product such as an asset inventory or a preliminary design investigation for roadway
construction or modification. These disjointed data collection functions should be consolidated such that the data
collected can be used to fulfill different requirements for these groups.
