As with quadrats, a number of replicate seed traps should be laid out in an appropriate design. Usually, the longer the traps are left in position, the more seeds will be trapped. So the measure you derive will be a rate. Traps should be removed or replaced after a few days or weeks. The period will depend on the rate of seed arrival. The seeds are removed from the traps, either by collecting the traps or by emptying them. On sticky traps this can be a complicated process, using forceps or a non-toxic solvent. All traps, but especially sediment traps, trap much more than seeds and so seeds need to be sorted. Because species have distinctive seeds, in principle the seeds can be identified as to species. However, there are no comprehensive seed-identification keys. You can make a collection of seeds from plants growing in your study area. However, related plants can have very similar seeds and some seeds may come from species not growing in the study
