In this review we attempted to describe the available options for combining two extracorporeal techniques: continuous renal replacement therapy with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and to present their advantages, disadvantages and possible complications.
In the authors’ opinion, the less intervention in the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation circuit, the better and safer the method is.We therefore support the use of the external continuous renal replacement therapy machine connected to the oxygenator in the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation circuit, recognizing its limitations as described above. There is a strong need for further assimilation of these two methods and possibly even combining them in the future in one extracorporeal circuit with an integrated monitoring system.
